During the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), the United States and France sent forces into Beirut to help maintain an unstable peace between various Christian and Muslim factions within Lebanon. On October 23, they were attacked by a suicide bomber, killing 241 U.S. and 58 French soldiers. The U.S. pulled its troops from Lebanon and war raged on for another seven years.
